Performance issues are probably one of the more complex things to approach, from not only a support perspective, but also from a client perspective. It is one of those all encompassing things that could literally be anything, and when most people find that performance isn’t what they expect, they do not know even where to start.

I want to write a series of articles about web performance in general, not just for Datatel Products or SharePoint itself because a lot of what we (Datatel Technical Support) use is common techniques for nailing down performance bottlenecks.

Preparing for SharePoint 2010 : Cumulative Updates

I have seen many clients who are on a basic install of SharePoint 2007 Service Pack 2. This is the minimum requirement for running the Datatel Portal. This works fine, except that you are missing out on performance and bug fixes that Microsoft regularly releases in the form of cumulative updates. Also, to prepare and migrate to SharePoint 2010 you need to be on at least the October 2009 Cumulative Update. This article goes over the Cumulative Update and a general guideline on installing updates.

I hope to write a series of articles about preparing for SharePoint 2010, dealing with specific issues that I see in the client base. The first issue I want to tackle is some Active Directory requirements that are new in SharePoint 2010. Obviously Active Directory is a very important aspect of most SharePoint deployments, though in SharePoint 2010 it can play a more minor role (more on that later).
