Beta Testers Go Live on Datatel Mobile Access
FAIRFAX, Va. (BUSINESS WIRE), June 30, 2010 - Datatel announced today the general availability of Datatel Mobile Access (MOX™), a mobile application for parents, prospects, students, faculty, and staff of higher education institutions to obtain academic and administrative information using iPhone and iPod touch devices. Quinnipiac University and Marietta College, participants in the MOX beta program, were the first schools to go live on MOX last week. MOX is powered by DubMeNow’s cross-platform, patent-pending software technology for smartphone information sharing.
The Quinnipiac University and Marietta College MOX applications securely provide all of the institutions’ constituents with finger-tip access to class schedules, class rosters, specific school events, and administrative information. Other interested parties within the institutions’ communities, such as parents, prospects, and alumni, also can download MOX to receive school news and events, view detailed maps and buildings on campus, and access important campus phone numbers and other key contact information.
“Most students today receive their information from a mobile device, not just from e-mail, as was true just a few years ago,” said Matthew Romeo, director of university applications at Quinnipiac. “Our administrators who tested MOX loved the student notification feature that can segment messages to specific people or groups over their smartphones. They know that when they send out a message over MOX, there is a much better chance that constituents will see it and be advised of critical notices.
“MOX also is a great marketing support tool for Quinnipiac,” continued Mr. Romeo. “Prospective students and their parents can download MOX from the iTunes Store and have in their hands detailed maps to navigate the campus, real-time news and events to get a feeling for our culture, and important phone numbers, in case they need help.
“For freshmen entering in the fall, MOX will be a great stress reducer because they will be able to find their courses, professors, class information, and locations instantly using the mapping feature,” said Mr. Romeo.
Initially available for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch, MOX will work on the most popular mobile platforms by the end of this year, including BlackBerry and Google Android. Windows Mobile, Nokia Symbian, and Palm Pre will be available in early 2011. MOX can be downloaded and used at no charge from the iTunes Store by anyone wishing to get a firsthand look at how Datatel schools successfully have incorporated key information into the campus experience. Simply type “MOX” into the iTunes search to start your mobile experience. A brief video about Datatel MOX is available at http://bit.ly/aC4gbs.
MOX can extend the Datatel Intelligent Learning Platform (ILP), a cohesive teaching and learning solution that addresses the costly fragmentation and other deficiencies of traditional stand-alone learning management systems.
Other features of Datatel Mobile include the ability to:
- Easily exchange contact information from phone to phone, including email, phone, address, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles, IM, and more;
- Receive personalized notifications such as security alerts and library past-due notices;
- Receive automatic address book updates whenever contacts update their info (new email, social network, address, etc.);
- Access information about public and private campus events and about events limited to specific groups such as students, faculty, and staff;
- Personalize newsfeeds from the institution; and
- Follow a GPS-enabled campus map to classroom buildings and other facilities.
