General Release Scheduled for Second Quarter of 2010
FAIRFAX, Va. (BUSINESS WIRE), March 23, 2010 - Quinnipiac University has begun beta testing Datatel Mobile Access (MOX™) for smartphones, which helps bind students, faculty, and administrators in a close community to achieve academic and institutional success. With MOX-enabled devices, these groups can access administrative and teaching and learning information from anywhere, at any time. General availability of MOX is scheduled for second quarter of 2010 for the iPhone and the iPod touch, and for later in 2010 for BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Nokia Symbian, Palm Pre, and Google Android devices.
Smartphones armed with MOX will allow verified owners to securely access personalized information via the Datatel Portal, such as class schedules, assignments, class rosters, events, announcements, and documents. MOX also can provide student, faculty, and staff with directories containing important contact information for campus security, the campus health center, and more. MOX also may be downloaded as a non-secure, publicly accessible application to provide institution maps, news, and events to help promote community and alumni relations.
Matthew Romeo, director of university applications at Quinnipiac commented, “This is perfect timing to deploy Datatel Mobile Access as we’re adding to and expanding our campuses. Building a sense of community has always been a Quinnipiac goal and we feel that MOX will help achieve that. Since we’re very happy with the Datatel Portal, becoming a beta for the Datatel Mobile Access is a natural progression.”
“Students and faculty are coming to us recommending apps for their smartphones,” said Janice Wachtarz, associate vice president, information services at Quinnipiac. “The faculty want to access information such as lectures while traveling, and students are expecting mobile access to their academic and administrative information. I would say to most institutions if your constituents aren’t asking for mobile access yet, they soon will be.”
Other features of Datatel Mobile include the ability to:
- Easily exchange contact information from phone to phone, including email, phone, address, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles, IM, and more;
- Receive automatic address book updates whenever contacts update their info (new email, social network, address, etc.);
- Access information about public and private campus events and about events limited to specific groups such as students, faculty, and staff;
- Receive personalized notifications such as security alerts and library past-due notices;
- Personalize newsfeeds from the institution, and
- Follow a GPS-enabled campus map to classroom buildings and other facilities.
Datatel Mobile will be demonstrated in the company’s exhibit booth at the Datatel Users’ Group 2010 National Conference and Expo to be held March 28–31 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center outside of Washington, D.C. Conference attendees and interested parties can follow conference updates at Twitter, #DUG2010, and download “DUG 2010” from the Apple App Store on their iPhones and iPod touches for session and other information.
